EISTEDDFOD WEEK

Dear Parents

A reminder for all and information for new parents

EISTEDDFOD WEEK - 28th Feb - 4th March 2011

For the last month your children have been busy preparing for these exciting events. the years we have developed our Eisteddfod activities so that all children in the school have maximum chance to participate. For example for some time it has been our practice that ALL the children will go on stage to take part in the class presentations, not just the finalists.

We hold special hour-long assemblies from Tuesday to Friday with competitions for every age group. Adjudicators from Rhosnesni High School judge the competitions (with special appearances by Mr Rowlands and Mrs Evans). There is great excitement to see who has done well. Certificates are given for 1st, 2ndand 3rdplace but every child who enters a competition in the juniors gains a house point and these go forward for several trophies, annually awarded.

There is a change this year. St David's day occurs on Tuesday 1st March and since we like to encourage the children to wear Welsh costume on this and the last day we suggest that the children could wear their costume all week, giving a real Welsh flavour to our school for this cultural event. If you prefer they could revert to uniform on Wednesday and Thursday but we are looking for a colourful audience on Tuesday and Friday. Traditional costume, still suitable for school with older children often liking to wear Welsh rugby or Welsh football tops. Please see a member of staff if you need clarification.

All these activities are an opportunity for the children to celebrate Welsh culture and language (as part of their Welsh curriculum). As usual we are supporting Marie Curie Cancer Care by selling cloth daffodils (suggested minimum donation 50p please); as you are aware we like to support the wonderful work this charity does to help people who are very ill to stay in their own homes.

We are really keen for parents to see as much of the excellent Eisteddfod work as possible and are organising the following events:-

" Tuesday 8 th March - A Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) Eisteddfod Concert; 9.00am for coffee & raffle and 9.30am for concert.
" Thursday 10th March - An Early Years Coffee Morning (Nursery and Reception); Doors open at 10.30am for coffee and 10.45am for concert.
" Wednesday 16th March - The Junior Winners Eisteddfod Concert
at 6.30pm (details to follow).

We will have programmes available on the first day to let you see what is organised and in addition I will put a list of winners and photographs on display on the school website www.barkerslaneschool.co.uk The winning work from Reception to Year 6 will also be displayed for all to see in the school hall.

Looking forward to a wonderful week and many thanks for your continued support.
