EVENING LEADER - Slovenian
teachers pay visit to Wrexham school in exchange link-up
Published Date:

STAFF and children at a Wrexham school have benefited from an exchange
with Slovenia. Earlier this year, three teachers from Barkers Lane
Community Primary School in Wrexham visited a school in Slovenia
and now teachers from the school there have made a return visit.
The two schools
entered a British National Global Gateway competition, which supplied
the funding for an exchange.
"We had special
assemblies and the Slovenian teachers taught our children in the
classroom alongside their own teachers, and taught Slovenian games
and songs," said Barkers Lane Headteacher Helen Andrews.
The two schools
also operated a 'buddy' project, which has seen older children in
the Slovakian school linking up with children at Barker's Lane on
the internet and sending each other gifts and letters.
"The buddy
project had a great impact on our children's wellbeing and behaviour,"
said Mrs Andrews.
"There has
been real communication between Slovenia and the UK.
"It is an
exchange of ideas on the two education systems so it's good professional
development for the teachers.
"The teachers
gain a great deal from discussing and viewing the way other cultures
teach their children and the impact on teachers and what they deliver
to our children is the main thing."
The Slovenian
delegation also visited Rhosnesni High School.

Foundation
phase afternoons
Twice a week Y3
and Y4 experience foundation phase curriculum in groups of ten children
with one teacher working on Art & Craft, Design & Technology,
Forest School activities, Science investigation and Information
Technology. This gives a real opportunity for teachers to know the
children and their responses to the curriculum. Here are pictures
of children undertaking the activities showing real concentration
and involvement.

Barkers
Lane, the co-ordinating school has an interest in learning through the
outdoors and has developed its school grounds to a high standard
to include a forest class, pond area, sensory garden and allotment area.
This project
is approved by European Commission in
Lifelong Learning Programme, action Comenius.
The Food for Thought project will bring together nine European schools
in Denmark, England, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey,
and Wales. Our mix of partner schools reflects the diversity within the
European Union. This partnership includes brand new private schools and
established public schools from small rural communities to urban capital
cities.
Students will discover, study and share information about food, climate
and traditions in all of our partner countries. They will use conventional
and new technologies to compare temperature readings over two years, produce
a multilingual dictionary of weather terms, grow local produce to make
their own dinner, make a calendar of international festivals, a picture
cookery book of traditional recipes, and finally produce a healthy lifestyle
guidebook based on proper eating and exercise.
Regular meetings of teachers will ensure appropriate planning and evaluation
at every stage. These will also enable a thorough understanding of European
education systems.
The Food for Thought project will not only benefit each school but also
their associated local communities. As our pupils gain a greater understanding
of food production and preparation the knowledge of these young Europeans
will directly filter upwards through family, local and international communities
creating a healthier generation of Europeans.

Japanese Network
We
are one of six schools in North Wales who are linking with a network
of schools from all over Japan.

May 2008
Catrin Williams,
a Welsh artist, came to work with Year 4 as part of our Japanese
project. We spent time working in the Sensory Garden, sketching
with different media - felt pens, metallic pens, wax crayons and
pastels.
It was a wonderful experience, enjoyed by all. The children worked
in sketch books that they had made themselves with Catrin.
Four pupils were selected to attend a day workshop with Catrin next
month, along with pupils from other participating schools.
Catrin praised the whole class for their enthusiasm and the work
they produced.

Mrs
Stapley visits Tafi Atome School in Ghana!
Mrs.
Stapley coordinates our Geography and Design Technology lessons
and over the last two years has taught an afternoon a week, alongside
the class teacher, to share good practice. Mrs. Stapley has identified
many ways to improve delivery of lessons and to make the subject
as relevant as possible for children. Barker's Lane children have
benefitted from many "hands-on" educational visits making
the most of every opportunity for learning.
Last
year we successfully applied for a British Council Grant to take
Y5's Water Project a further stage forward. We couldn't send the
whole class to Africa but we could send Mrs. Stapley and now our
children have access to first hand knowledge of the issues and experiences
that African children learn from, true global learning. Original
lesson plans we can share with other schools such as Rhosnesni High
School are:-
a: A day in
the life of an African school child
b: Presentation
on typical African homelife - cooking and food
c: A presentation
on weaving in the village
d: Powerpoint
presentation on water in Africa, complementing the lesson materials
to be completed by both schools

Marie
Curie Pots of care
Just
before half term we asked our children to wear daffodil colours or something
bright in aid of Marie Curie Pots of care. Children then had a specific
activity to do depending on age to raise money from sponsorship for the
charity. There are pictures of the Early Years' children involved in their
" sleeping bulbs" activity which was timed for three minutes.
All completed the task successfully!! We also have some pictures from
today's nursery group visiting our pond, looking for plants and animals.
Plants we found were the daffodils, snowdrops, toadstools, and other fungi,
but we only spotted a bird's nest, and we saw no other animals (hardly
surprising - it was too cold!) The pond was totally frozen solid, but
we enjoyed our winter walk!
